Gatwick launches Airbnb like car rental serviceBy Charlotte Whyatt - Mon 19th Mar 2018
London Gatwick airport has partnered up with Car and Away to launch the start-up’s unique vehicle rental service in their South Terminal’s busy Short Stay carpark.
Working much like Airbnb, Car and Away enables you to rent out your vehicle to paying members of the public while you’re away on holiday.
Their only requirements are that your vehicle is less than eight years old, has fewer than 100,000 miles on the clock, has passed its MOT and is insured on a fully comprehensive policy.
Customers could potentially earn up to £160 a week if they’ve got a larger SUV sized vehicle available during the country’s peak summer holidays season.
Only “carefully vetted UK and Ireland residents aged 25 and over” are permitted to use the service and all vehicles under Car and Away’s care are fully protected by Allianz Insurance and the RAC’s comprehensive 24/7 breakdown cover.
An unobtrusive telematics unit will also be temporarily fitted into every vehicle to monitor against reckless or dangerous driving.
"For people renting the cars it's another game changer," said Andy Hibbert, Founder and CEO of Car & Away. “They get the exact car they book – not a similar one – with no queues, no hidden extras and drive away in under 10 minutes every time.”
While there’s currently no word on if the service will be expanding to any more of Gatwick's terminals, or indeed other airports and beyond, if it’s deemed to be a success an expansion seems highly likely.
