Green Flag | Our Review
Green Flag offers one of the UK’s longest-running and most reliable breakdown cover services. Working both Nationwide and across Europe, Green Flag offers breakdown response 24/7 and 365 days a year, whether you’re at home or on the road.
Green Flag began life in 1971 as the National Breakdown Recovery Club. Using a network of mechanics and garages, the breakdown cover provider planned to deliver a genuine rival to the AA and RAC, both of whom were dominating the market.
Cover was a mere £1.50 a year back in 1971, although it was restricted to within a 50-mile radius of their base. After three years, memberships had grew to over 100,000, and the name was changed to Green Flag in 1994.
Pudsey was originally home, but now there are many offices, with Green Flag operated by the Direct Line Group.
The benefits of Green Flag cover
Green Flag fixes 4 out of 5 breakdowns by the roadside, and with most policies there’s no extra charge for misfuelling. If you don’t need to be rescued at any point during the year’s membership then there’s a no-callout discount for your renewal.
The cover is kept clear and simple, and there’s a policy which covers your vehicle, no matter who is driving.
Green Flag uses a network of over 2,300 vehicles and mechanics, with all breakdowns managed via operation centres. It ensures a fast, efficient breakdown assistance and recovery service, and Green Flag also always aims to provide excellent customer care.
Types of cover from Green Flag
Members can choose personal cover, covering them in any car, or vehicle cover, where it’s a specific vehicle on the policy, no matter the driver.
Then you can pick your type of cover, or level of cover. Rescue gives you roadside assistance with recovery to a local garage if needed. Rescue Plus adds misfuelling cover and cover at home, whilst Recovery will take you, your passengers and your car to a location of your choosing in the UK.
Recovery does not include cover at home, but take the defaqto-rated 5-star Recovery Plus and you’ll get the top level of Green Flag UK breakdown cover. That’s roadside assistance, national recovery, cover at home and misfuelling cover, as well as onward travel, which provides alternative transport should Green Flag be unable to fix at the roadside.
There’s also comprehensive European cover available, with both short-term and annual multi-trip options.
How much is Green Flag cover?
To get an exact quote you’d need to provide your details, but as a rough guide you are looking at prices from £25 for the most basic cover, and prices from £60 for Recovery Plus.
You can usually find some good deals and discounts, with some prices exclusive to online customers, and there’s the no-callout discount if you don’t need to use Green Flag’s service after a year.
